The weakest of the Ra's trilogy, Bride of the Demon is Mike Barr's follow-up to Son of the Demon. With Batman and Al Ghul once against adversaries, Ra's realizes that he is in need of a new heir. With no human on earth outside of Bruce Wayne worthy of being the Demon's Head, Ra's procures himself a wife (an aging Hollywood starlet), determined to have a son.

To its credit, Bride of the Demon shows the detective side of the Dark Knight, something that most Batman tales fail to do. When an environmental scientist is abducted, Batman is forced to confront his greatest foe once more. Ra's has a new dastardly plan, to repair the damage to the ozone at the cost of almost all human life on Earth.

Ra's is shown as both tyrant and tortured soul. It's hard not to feel some sympathy for his cause, though those emotions are dashed by Al Ghul's need to be master of the planet. With a new love in his life, the first since the death of his wife decades ago, Ra's once again shows that he is much more than Batman arch-nemesis. This is a family saga and Batman is indeed part of that family. Unlike the Joker or Two-Face or any other Batman enemy, when Batman faces off against Ra's it's like a dysfunctional family reunion.

Batman: Bride of the Demon features numerous fights, daring escapes, devious disguises and a climactic showdown between Ra's and the Bat. Still, it doesn't feel as textured as the other two books in the trilogy, Son of the Demon and Birth of the Demon. Tom and Eva Grindberg's art is a welcome throwback to the '70s and shows some excellent command of storytelling, but it's the story itself that just isn't as captivating as Barr's previous Ra's work.

Bride of the Demon is a necessary component of the Ra's trilogy and a book that Batman fans should read. However, don't expect to be blown away by this work. Still, compared to much of the excessively moody Batman tales of the past few years, Bride is a great read.
